good morning. it is monday, march 14th as we take a live look over washington, d.c. it is a very clear day. you can even see the washington monument there in the very distance. good morning. i'm sarah simmons. welcome to fox 5 morning news. let's get a check of the weather with tucker barnes. a little cold out there, tucker. >> yeah, it's cool. temperatures falling back into the 30s across much of the area here. there is your satellite-radar.

we've get a few clouds moving through. we have a little rain out to the west. that will be the forecast for tomorrow night. up ahead of that, we have high pressure off to the north and that will keep us drier today. 39 in frederick. 39 at patuxent naval air station. 41 in ocean city. cooler than yesterday, 52 the daytime high. more details on the forecast in about three minutes. back to you. >> thank you, tucker. the devastation in japan continues. another hydrogen explosion at a nuclear plant injured 11 workers but officials say the reactor is still intact. the death toll is now over 10,000 people. the central bank is pumping nearly $200 billion into the

market but the to go i don't stock exchange still plunged 6%. here at home, the disaster in japan was a big issue on the sunday talk shows. melanie alnwick has a round-up for us. >> reporter: japan's u.s. ambassador and on meet the press. >> we have to take quick action. we have to take a most cautious attitude and also we have to mobilize all our forces. these are the principles in meeting with these great challenges that we are face. >> reporter: a nuclear security expert told chris wallace. worst case scenario is a full meltdown of multiple reactors. >> they spew radioactivity into

the ground, the air, water. some of that radioactivity could carry in the atmosphere to the west coast of the united states. >> reporter: the fear is already spreading, dampening what had been a growing call for more nuclear facilities here in the u.s. senator joe lieberman said all 104 u.s. plants do go through annual safety drills. >> i've been a big supporter of nuclear power because it is domestic, it is ours and it is clean. we've had a good safety record here in the united states. but i think we've got -- i don't want to stop the building of nuclear power plants but i think we've got to kind of quickly put the brakes on until we can absorb what has happened in japan. >> reporter: first, congressmen have to deal with our debt

crisis. there is a bipartisan group crafting a way out. >> every day that we don't act, we add $4 billion to our national debt. we'll have to pay that back. >> reporter: both sides agree for the most part on the tactics. the challenge is to get something done before the 2012 political race gets in the way. melanie alnwick, fox 5 news. in other top stories, police are still on the hunt for two suspects involved in the murder of a woman and the sexual assault of her friend. 30-year-old jayna murray of arlington was killed and police have not identified the 27-year- old woman who was sexually assaulted. vectors say the suspects got into the store -- investigators say the suspects got into the store but a door that was left

there. it will be chilly as kids head out the door to go to the bus stop. should be a nice dry one. >> it feels cool to me. i've been in miami this weekend. >> that explains it. there is nothing to talk about here. some rain out to the west. that is our next rainmaker and that will get in here tomorrow night into wednesday morning. ahead of that, we have high pressure that will block the rain from getting here today. we should be nice and dry, just a little cool. 40 at reagan national. humidity, 63%. winds are out of the north at five miles per hour. pressure is up for those people keeping track of pressure. cool start. it will be nice out there but not as warm as it was yesterday with highs in the low 50s. yesterday , we were close to 60. >> let's get a check of traffic

disasters in japan where a 6.0 quake just hit the japanese city of nagano this morning northwest of tokyo. people across japan had been dealing with powerful aftershocks three days of the massive quake and tsunami. as adam housley shows us, there are new fears of more problems at the nuclear plant. >> reporter: a potential nuclear disaster now threatening japan. officials say one reactor at a plant has partially melted. authorities here in japan have been using seawater to cool down two reactors at the facility after friday's earthquake and tsunami damaged the cooling system. the government has evacuated about # hundred thousand people in -- about 200,000 people in the area. >> it appears the gauge is not showing that the water level is rising. >> reporter: this as another nuclear facility reports problems. an emergency was declared at a power planted.

officials are now investigating the source of the radioactivity. one of two pumps in the cooling system malfunctioned but authorities say the reactor is still operating normally with one pump. the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission says radiation from japan is unlikely to reach the u.s. in harmful amounts. we keep getting dramatic pictures. this video shows a powerful tsunami wave smashing in. it crashes over the seawall crashing against cars and the m been upgraded to 9.0. >> i survived but my daughter was swept away. i still held my hope but i could not see the direction of the town. >> reporter: meanwhile, u.s. search and rescue teams arriving here in japan. helicopters using the deck of the u.s.s. ronald reagan delivering emergency supplies to survivors. the u.s. state department has

also issued an alert suggesting that americans avoid travel to japan until the situation here is stabilized. adam housley, fox news. the fairfax county urban search and rescue team is now on the ground with other humanitarian aid on the way there. their mission is to help this man. he was found 10 miles out to sea clinging to a roof and wondering what happened to his wife. there are american navy bases close to the quake zone helping with the efforts but there are fears that people most in need probably haven't even been spotted yet. >> there are also pockets of communities where no one has been able to get to yet because they've been cut off by roads that have been destroyed or even by the tsunami waters that haven't receded. so those are the people we are really worried about. >> the u.s. sent one other urban search and rescue team. that team is from los angeles. sour coverage of the tsunami and earthquake continues on myfoxdc.com. we'll find all the latest developments there as well as

pictures of the aftermath on our web site f you have loved ones in the affected areas, can you track them down with the google people finder. the hunt continues this morning for two suspects involved in the murder of an arlington woman and the sexual assault of another woman at a popular bethesda clothing store. sherry ly has the latest on this one. >> reporter: good morning. this morning, lululemon is still shut for the most part shielding people from the horror of what happened inside. 30-year-old jayna murray of arlington was killed. her 27-year-old coworker tied up and sexually assaulted. this morning, you can see dozens of flowers have been left over the weekend in a makeshift memorial as the hunt continues for the two suspects. police say two masked men got into the yoga and athletic apparel store through an unlocked door on friday night after the workers went back after hours to revive something

left behind. the two women were found inside the next morning. jayna murray was described as many by vibrant, fun and athletic. she was engaged to be married. >> she liked to travel and she liked to hike and very athletic person and full of spirit. >> i don't know what it is. it is horrific beyond words. >> reporter: some merchants in the area say they are meeting with their employees to discuss ways to step up security like not taking out the trash at night. some store owners say they are thinking about getting surveillance cameras. federal realty is now offering a $10,000 reward on top of the reward being offered by crimesolvers. police have canvassed the neighborhood but do not have anything but a vague description of the suspects. that is the latest here in bethesda. back to you. we continue to monitor metro this morning. another violent attack on a metro train and this time, a

four people were hurt after an explosion at a massachusetts chemical plant. state police say it happened at bostick incorporated in middleton. the plant manufactures plastics and adhesives. we have new details in a deadly bus crash in new york. there are conflicting stories coming from the driver and the passengers. the driver says the bus got clipped by a tractor-trailer. but passengers and witnesses say the bus swerved for no reason just before sliding off the road and into a pole. fourteen people died in that crash and police have located the tractor-trailer. the ntsb says it is too early to say for the two hit one another. the truck's gps system and a video camera from the bus are being looked at to try to determine the speed of the vehicles. in the latest in libya, the

rebels have reportedly regained control of a key oil town overnight. government forces relentlessly bombed the rebels from the air, land and sea. in the last week being the rebels have lost most of the cities they captured in the early days of the uprising against colonel moammar ghadafi. in yemen, at least three people were killed and hundreds more injured in anti-government protests there. officers fired bullets, tear gas and a water cannon at pro- democracy demonstrators n bahrain, thousands of protesters clashed with police in hopes of ousting the sunni dynasty. the white house says the u.s. strongly condemns the violence that is taking place in yemen and bahrain. we continue to monitor the devastation in japan. coming up next, we'll recap the overnight developments there. we have details of some drastic

welcome back. northern new jersey residents are dealing with some major flooding. take a look at the streets here. this is in little falls. that is covered in water. hundreds of people have left their homes and officials warn the surging waters may possibly get as high as five feet above the flood stage. little falls and paterson are expected to be two of the hardest hit areas. >> that is no fun at all. >> no, it is not. i know a lot of the streams and rivers in our area are high, nothing like that that we're dealing with and we have more rain coming. >> we are not expecting any heavy rain when it gets here. it is not today either. today, we're fine, just sunshine. >> i can handle that. we need that. it is springtime, isn't it? >> watch this five-day forecast. i'm going to make you very happy. nice day yesterday. lots of sunshine. a little breezy at times with

highs in the upper 50s. felt pretty good. reagan national was 59 degrees. bwi marshall too. i show you these numbers because we won't be quite as warm today. our highs today will only be in the upper 40s and low 50s. eight degrees cooler than yesterday. temperatures all over the place this morning. the warm spot continues to be here in washington where we're 40 degrees. annapolis is 37. a few spots here off to the west. out at dulles, 31 degrees. 37 in frederick and 30 in culpeper. cold temperatures, particularly off to the north and west to start your morning. it won't be as warm as yesterday. still, with plenty of sunshine, we are expecting dry conditions for our monday. i think it will be a decent day with a nice warming trend as we get into the middle and end of the week. it should be mostly sunny

the wilson bridge. -- no incidents to report. no problems reported up towards 395. you will find the beltway running smoothly between annandale and merrifield. overnight roadwork on the northbound side before you reach falls road has cleared. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. if you are just joining us this morning, we want to bring you the latest on the japan earthquake. a second explosion in three days has rocked a nuclear power plant today. the amount of radiation released is unclear right now. however, the u.s. moved the aircraft carrier u.s.s. ronald reagan further offshore after it detected radiation was about the same as one month's normal exposure. the official death toll from friday's quake and tsunami is at 2800 this morning. however, that number is expected to rise dramatically with one police chief estimating 10,000 people died in his province alone.

and japan's financial markets are rattled. the nikkei plunged 6% today despite japan's central bank pumping a massive $184 billion into money markets. final respects for the last american veteran of world war i. frank buckles is being remembered. a stream of people came to the funeral home in northwest d.c. yesterday to pay their respects. buckles enlisted when he was just 16 after lying about his age to get in. he died february 27th at the age of 110. there will be visitation today from noon until 9:00 p.m. his body will lie in repose tomorrow from 8:00 a.m. to #: -- to 2:00 p.m. the bug fight that broke out last weekend at the dmv music and entertainment awards. amateur video showed some of the brawl which left six people
